Verb Donuts (Action, Helping & Linking)

Identifying verb phrases in a sentence can be tough. This document is designed to help students learn how to differentiate between the action, helping, and linking verbs using a donut metaphor! When going to the bakery, you can only buy a chocolate (action verb) or vanilla (linking verb) donut. However, you can also add up to three sprinkles (helping verbs)! This metaphor helps students remember that they can only have one main verb in a sentence (chocolate or vanilla donut). From there, they can identify if the donut has sprinkles or not. This document includes verb phrase patterns, helping verbs list, linking verb list, and the substitution test. Students love using this way to learn verb phrases because it’s fun - everyone loves donuts!
